Toddler Trails, Adventure Awaits: Sharing the Joy of Snowboarding with Toddlers
Welcome to “Toddler Trails, Adventure Awaits,” a section dedicated to embracing outdoor adventures with your little ones.
At Beco, we’re all for adventure with your toddlers, creating special core memories in direct contact with nature. Read on, as Aleksandra shares the rewarding winters she gets to spend with her toddlers.
Ever wondered if it’s possible to get your young toddler on a snowboard? Well, wonder no more because not only is it possible, it’s incredibly rewarding too. Picture this: your little one, barely out of diapers, cruising down the slopes with a big grin on their face. Sound too good to be true? It’s not!
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the process of introducing your toddler to the world of snowboarding and share some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. Leading by example and sharing the experience have been the most impactful methods of introducing our daughters, Ela and Pina, to snowboarding.
For the first season or two, we focused on turning our winters into one big mountain-wide co-riding adventure. We wanted them to see firsthand that snowboarding is about more than just getting from the top of the hill to the bottom—it’s about exploration, creativity, appreciating the beauty of our surroundings, and spending quality time with friends and family.
When it comes to gear, starting with the right equipment is crucial. We began both Ela and Pina on Burton Riglet boards, first dragging them around the living room and then onto the straight parts of the slopes. One of the advantages of this board is the retractable ‘riglet reel’ leash mounted on the board, which can be used to pull them across the flats. This gentle introduction to standing on the board helped them feel comfortable and confident.
Later on, we transitioned to the Burton ‘After School Special’ boards, which both girls still ride today. These boards have been reliable companions on their snowboarding journey.
Additionally, we switched to Burton boots with Boa lacing systems, allowing the girls to put their boots on and take them off independently—a time-saving convenience for us as parents. While the board and boots are essential, the rest of the gear is not as critical, as long as it fits.
However, one essential piece we swear by is our Beco Toddler Carrier. When we hit the slopes with our adventurous girls, the Beco Toddler Carrier becomes our practical helper, ready for action. It’s our secret weapon that effortlessly carries our tired Pina back to the cozy lodge or car after a day of snowy adventures. And when it’s nap time, it transforms into the comfiest spot for a snooze, giving our little one a snug place to rest. With its comfy design, soft straps, and adjustable fit, the Beco Toddler Carrier keeps both Pina and us comfy and supported throughout our snowy outings.
But the Beco Toddler Carrier is more than just a tool—it’s also a way for us to make memories and bond as a family. As we trek through snowy trails together, taking breaks to enjoy the scenery or share quiet moments, the carrier becomes a symbol of our adventures and closeness. With the carrier, we feel confident exploring the slopes, knowing we’re not just carrying our daughters, but also building lasting connections that make our family time special.

Other tips for Snowboarding with Toddlers:
- Start Them Young: The key to success when it comes to snowboarding with toddlers is to start them young. Our daughter Ela, now 6 years old, began riding with her own board at just 18 months old, and now her younger sister Pina is following in her footsteps. Starting early not only helps toddlers become comfortable with the sport but also instills a passion for snowboarding that will last a lifetime.
- Bring Friends or Include Kids in Snowboarding School: Snowboarding is more fun with friends, especially for toddlers. Consider bringing along friends or enrolling your little one in a snowboarding school where they can learn and play with other kids their age. Not only will they have more fun, but they’ll also feel more comfortable and confident on the slopes.
- Snacks and Breaks: Snacks are a parent’s best friend on the mountain. They serve as currency, bribes, distractions, and goals all rolled into one. Whether it’s a quick energy boost before hitting the slopes or a well-deserved treat after a successful run, snacks are indispensable. And let’s not forget the importance of taking breaks. Even the most enthusiastic toddlers can tire out after a few runs, so it’s essential to have activities like building a snowman, sledding, or simply enjoying some hot cocoa to rejuvenate tired legs and spirits.
- Have Fun, Have Fun, Have Fun: Above all else, remember to have fun! Snowboarding with a toddler is an adventure filled with laughter, joy, and unforgettable memories. Embrace the journey, celebrate every milestone, and cherish the moments spent together on the mountain. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?
With the right gear, plenty of snacks, and a willingness to embrace the joy of snowboarding, you’ll be well-equipped to hit the slopes with your little ones and create lasting memories together.
So, pack your essentials, buckle up your little one, and embark on an unforgettable adventure filled with warmth, comfort, and cherished moments on the mountain.
