10 Tips for Outdoor Adventures with Your Little One This Winter

Winter might be chilly, but it’s one of the most magical seasons to get outside and explore with your little one. There’s something about frosty mornings, snow-dusted trails, and cozy moments that make winter adventures so special.

As a parent, it can feel daunting to gear up and head out when the temperatures drop, but trust me—it’s worth it. Watching your child’s face light up as they crunch through the snow or spot icicles sparkling in the sunlight is pure joy.

The key? A little planning, the right gear, and a sense of adventure (plus snacks—always snacks!). Whether you’re heading to the park, going for a hike, or just strolling through your neighborhood, these 10 tips will help make your outdoor winter adventures fun, safe, and full of memories. So bundle up, and let’s embrace the season together!

1. Layering up like a pro!

Going out and battling the cold is much easier when you’re bundled up nice and warm, the same goes for your little one. Though it’s important to consider that young babies can overheat. With this in mind, babies regulate their temperature best when they are closest to you. Keep to dressing your little one in light layers with natural fibres so that the natural heat between you can work its magic (your wrap/carrier works as a layer also!). Don’t forget to dress them in cosy hats, gloves and socks to help protect them against the wind. Layering up around you both is another great way to keep snug against those harsh temperatures.

2. Use a carrier for hands-free warmth

Babywearing is a great way to keep both yourself, and baby warm through the most natural method, sharing heat! Carriers with winter friendly designs, such as the Beco 8 which is great for babywearing in all seasons!

If you’re planning on heading out for a magical, winter hike, be mindful of icy paths causing difficulty when adventuring with your little one. It can be best to keep to flat paths where chances of slippage are kept to a minimum!

There’s nothing worse than that feeling of being out and realising you forgot to pack something important! It could help to make up a list of what you could need for your adventure! We recommend packing diapers, some extra layers, wipes, snacks, water, and a thermos of something warm for you. A small blanket can also come in handy!

5. Set Realistic Goals

As much as we would love everyday to be some big adventure, realistically that’s often hard to achieve. It’s okay to end the walk early if your little one is cold, tired or hungry! You made it out of the house, and we think that’s an achievement in itself.

6. Make It Fun

Getting your little ones excited to go out by turning your walk into a game is a great way to make fun for all the family! You could look for animal tracks in the snow, collect pinecones, or have a mini snowball toss (if your little one is old enough)!

7. Protect Their Skin

Winter air can be harsh, especially on your baby’s delicate skin. Applying a gentle, baby-safe moisturizer to their cheeks and lips creates a protective barrier against the cold and wind, keeping their skin soft and safe.

8. Watch the Time

Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so it’s important to monitor their time outdoors. In very cold weather, sticking to short outings helps your baby stay warm and comfortable while you both enjoy the fresh air!

9. Use the Right Gear

If you live somewhere with particularly cold winters, investing in the right winter gear is important to keep them cozy on the go. If your child is walking, investing in sturdy, insulated boots is a great option. Likewise, if you are babywearing, a babywearing jacket could be a great option to keep you and your little one warm.

10. End with a Warm Treat!

Who doesn’t love a warm treat after being out in the cold! After your adventure, warming up together with a cozy hot chocolate (for you) and some warm milk or a snack for your little one is the perfect way to cap off a winter outing!
